John Singer Sargent Charcoal Study

One of my Christmas gifts this year was a book on John Singer Sargent titled the Sensualist. It has great charcoal figure studies. He made them all on the standard 19x25" paper. I thought that I would try a study of one of these in the same size. It was fun doing a torso on this scale. It is a good back study and doing a lot more of them would be helpful. This was also done with a new charcoal that didn't have the rough little bits that I have been finding in other charcoals. It also comes in these great tubes so the sticks wont break as easily. It is by Creative Mark and I bought it at Jerry's Artarama in Providence yesterday.

Homage to John Singer Sargent

Today's Daily Painting was made in homage to John Singer Sargent. I used a painting that Sargent made for Jacques Barenton of a little girl in a sailor outfit. I modernized her by putting her in a red shirt, made her a brunette and tossed the big outdated bow for my study on my tiny 15 X 15 cm panel. It is a good exercise and I would like to try it on a larger scale. I do like the small scale because it forces me not to get too fussy about the details and just focus on the major impression.

Study of a Sargent

I am so glad to be back home and making my daily painting again. After my sculpting class I wanted to do a study of the face. I picked a John Singer Sargent painting to copy for my practice. He was such an amazing portrait painter. His work has influenced me greatly. So here is my little painting that I offer you for today. I hope you enjoy it!
